Description

Key Characters: Leaves woolly or canescent, inflorescence woolly; Leaves thick coriaceous, densely woolly underneath; Leaves orbicular, cordate, subsessile.

Growth Form: Medium-sized trees 5-10 m. high

Stems: Branches, robust, terete, Bark usually rough and fissured, separating in thick flakes, sometimes smooth and separating in long thin strips, vegetative buds obovoid.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blade orbicular to suborbicular, 1.5-6 cm. in length and width. Apex often retuse. Base cordate. Upper surfaces dull glabrous or somewhat shining (in Oahu specimens) ; lower surfaces densely gray or white-woolly; coriaceous. Margins entire and revolute to flat. Several pairs of raised veins radiating from base; intramarginal nerve 1-2 mm. from the leaf-margin, the nerves raised and prominent. Petioles pubescent, 2-4 mm. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences of 2–5 pairs of cymules, densely white-woolly as are the calyx, calyx-lobes and in part the petals; bracteoles ovate, rounded, woolly, 3-5 mm.; hypanthium 3–7 mm high, 3–8 mm wide. Flowers red, pink, orange, bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic; pedicels very short, 1-3 mm. Sepals white-woolly, large and broad 5 mm. including the rounded lobes. Petals white-woolly (at least in part) and rounded. Stamens stamens about 2 cm. Ovary nearly superior; style about 23 mm. long, protruding

Fruit: Capsule densely woolly; about 6-7 mm. long exserted from the calycine tube.
